No 1D shadow factory

Constructed in the early 1940's for the manufacture of spare parts and components of aircraft engines for the Bristol Aircraft Company, the site was managed by Rover. After the end of the war production was changed to engines for tanks and it later became used as a storage facility for the ministry of supply.

This selection of photo's show some of the remnants of the 1940's factory.

The time office at the western end of tunnel 1. Each of the four main tunnels has one of these. The locations of the racks for the time cards can be clearly seen on the opposite walls.

Tunnel 1 looking west towards the time office. The main tunnels were generally used for access whilst most of the production took place in the galleries to either side. The first gallery to the right was the tool room and that to the left is marked 'part tool room'.

Tunnel 4 looking west. This area would have been part of the area allocated to the RAF during world war two for use as storage for aircraft spares.
First Avenue looking west towards the section that is now sealed off to form the 1980's RGHQ. This area would have also been part of the area allocated to the RAF during world war two.
