The Friends of Drakelow

Dutch
Visitors Fly In For Tunnel Tour

On Saturday 10th May the Friends of Drakelow Tunnels hosted an unusual
tour. Dutch businessman Ries Oostlander and friends arrived in 5 helicopters
for a tour of the world war 2 underground factory. They landed in a
field above the tunnels and were taken for a tour of the underground
complex as part of a weekend visit to the U.K. Ries had met Paul Stokes
of the Friends of Drakelow Tunnels several years earlier when his helicopter
had been forced to land above the tunnels due to bad weather. He was
so impressed with an impromptu tour that he vowed to return with friends
at a later date. Paul said "We have had vintage cars, vintage motorbikes
and military vehicles before, but this must be the most unusual tour
so far! It was a spectacular sight when they all arrived and departed".
If you wish to come along on one of our tours helicopters are optional,
but advanced booking essential! Further info on the guided
tours pages.
